Between a Waffle and a Hard Place: An Outsider’s Take On Kevin Smith

Category : Opinion

20 years ago, a chubby guy from New Jersey went from an aspiring, foul-mouthed filmmaker to one of the most polarizing and talked about  writer/director’s working today – almost over night. More surprising is how Kevin Smith was able to become this media mammoth without making anything more than a mediocre film. How does one go from a random New Jersey clerk to such a loved and loathed figure? The answer is, Kevin Smith is one of the best self promoters working in the entertainment business. He works cross-platforms, knows his audience and had no problem marketing the hell out of himself or his products.

His methods and openness have opened up much debate and venom as of late. Most recently with the Sundance 2011 shenanigans of his Red State World Premiere. There have been plenty of articles on this, read the below article first if you don’t know the full story.

Kevin Smith Buys His Own Film At Sundance Auction, Swears Off Distributors, and Announces Full Details for Self-Distribution (Slashfilm)

It’s hard not to talk about Kevin Smith without seemingly contradicting myself. So, I’m going to try to lay it all out here, and I hope it makes sense.

DVD/Blu Ray Releases for 11/17/2009

Category : DVD/BD Releases

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me.  I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person.  At least I’m not spending money on heroine.

New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week.  Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations.

Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

Must Buy:

Star Trek

Star Trek (Three-Disc +Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]
List Price: $39.99
Amazon Price: $19.99

Average customer review:

Seeing Star Trek in the theater was my favorite summer movie experience of 2009. A Star Trek movie for non-Trekkers and Trekkers alike, although some of the “Super-Trekkers” may have some gripes. Hands down, this is my favorite Star Trek film right behind Wrath of Khan and First Contact.

A couple weeks ago I posted Part 1 (Kevin Smith Talks A Couple of Dicks) of a 4 part interview with Kevin Smith by Lee Stranahan.

Kevin Smith Talks about A Couple of Dicks

Category : News

I love Kevin Smith.  His movies are a guilty of pleasure of mine.  A couple of weeks ago, news broke that he was directing his first movie with Warner Brothers and it’s also the first movie he hasn’t written.  The movie is called A Couple of Dicks and this is a big step for him.  Seeing Kevin Smith want to stretch himself as an artist is inspiring.

Above is an exclusive interview he gave to Lee Stranahan, a writer, photographer and independent filmmaker. He writes for The Huffington Post and blogs at BobCesca.com.
