DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 4/20/2010

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me. I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person. At least I’m not spending money on heroine. New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations. Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

BUY IT

Crazy Heart Jeff Bridges can do no wrong.  His Academy Award winning performance as a washed up country singer and the music itself make Crazy Heart essential viewing.  Plus great supporting roles by Colin Farrel and Maggie Gyllenhaal. (Amazon) Read more →

An Argument for Movie Piracy

One of my major pet peeves is commercials and trailers on the Blu Ray and DVD format.  Even worse are trailers and ads that you are FORCED to watch.  If you’re going to show trailers, can’t the manufacturers at least let us skip directly to the Main Menu if we don’t want to see them?

The above picture [click it to enlarge] does a great job of explaining my point.  If you want to watch a certain movie, sometimes it’s easier to pirate the thing.  I really hope movie studios are listening to the grumblings of movie buffs like myself.  We’ve paid money for the movies we own, let us watch them!

Public Enemies split audiences in theaters, but it’s Michael Mann’s brave technical film making that sets this apart from the pack. Great performances, spectacular sound design, and unique use of HD digital cameras nudge this into a Must Buy.

Movie Review: Wolfhound

04

Wolfhound (Volkodav iz roda Serykh Psov)

Rating: ★★★★☆

Directed By: Nikolai Lebedev

Starring: Aleksandr Bukharov, Oksana Akinshina, Aleksandr Domogarov, Igor Petrenko

Plot Synopsis:

He was condemned to death, but survived to wreak revenge for the murder of his clan. The last member of the clan of the Grey Hounds became a fearless warrior by the name of Wolfhound. After cheating death in the mines, Wolfhound sets out on a journey with his constant companion, the Earthbound Bat. Wolfhound has but one desire – to destroy the Maneater, a merciless warrior who slaughtered the village of the Grey Hounds.

Review:

The 2006 Russian Fantasy film Wolfhound, based on the novel by Maria Semyonova, is a welcomed entry in the Fantasy genre. Not enough of these movies are made, and when they are they are pretty horrible (Dungeons and Dragons).  So, when one comes around and is actually pretty awesome, reading subtitles is the least of my concerns.  Finally released on DVD in 2009, Wolfhound is an awesome ride.  If you love movies like Conan, Beastmaster, Krull and Lord of the Rings, then you’ll adore this little film.

Viral Marketing For the Film “Look” Censored by Post Office

2look-postcard

A viral marketing post card for the upcoming movie Look scheduled to be mailed via the U.S. Post Office never went out, as it was deemed offensive.

While there is no nudity, it still is pretty questionable.  Some people are screaming censorship, but being a parent myself I can kind of side on the U.  S. Post Office on this one.  What do you think?

From Chud:

Writer/Director Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City) told the NY Post today- “We’re all in shock. Not only is it censorship, but with the post office in such financial straits, it’s ridiculous they won’t mail it.”

Look arrives on dvd May 5 via Anchor Bay.

geekGasm! Night of the Creeps on DVD in October!

nightofthecreepsmovieposter

**UPDATE: Blu-Ray most likely in the works! (AintItCool)

For Horror fans, we can all breath a sigh of relief.  The awesome 80′s zombie flick Night of the Creeps is FINALLY set to arrive on DVD in October! After suffering through our VHS copies, crappy bootlegs and signing online petitions we can have a decent copy of Night of the Creeps in our collections.

From Chud:

Until this October. And it’s going to be a special edition! Red Shirt Pictures’ Michael Felsher was on Dead Pit radio today and said that he had just spoken to Sony and the disc was official. He said: ‘It’s going to be the director’s cut with the original ending. We’re going to go balls to the wall with the special features on it.’

When I heard about this, I busted out my white man dance and am now scouring Amazon for Pre-Sale info.  I’ll keep you posted.

Fox Removing Special Features from Rental DVDs

burnfox

Twentieth Century Fox continues to show us that they don’t care about being dicks.  According to Slashfilm (who got their info from a report by VideoBusiness, via CNet), it’s been announced that the movie studio would begin stripping rental SKUs of Special Features and Commentaries in order to strengthen it’s faltering DVD sales.

Now, personally, when I rent a movie I don’t watch the special features if I’m going to buy it.  I need something to look forward to when I purchase a movie.  But, my personal motivations aside, I think this is a lame move to try to milk more DVD sales out of the consumer.

Look, Fox, just create some quality movies and you won’t have to make up for your crap sales by doing this.  Read more at Slashfilm.

Geekgasm! Outlander DVD Specs Announced!

Outlander has been a movie I’ve been looking forward to for some time.  It’s got Spaceships, Monsters and Vikings.  What more could you ask for? Looks like the DVD/Blu-Ray is finally on it’s way after a very limited theatrical run.  Look for it in stores or online May 19, 2009.  I know I’ll be picking it up that day!
