DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 4/20/2010

Category : DVD/BD Releases

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me. I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person. At least I’m not spending money on heroine. New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations. Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

BUY IT

Crazy Heart Jeff Bridges can do no wrong.  His Academy Award winning performance as a washed up country singer and the music itself make Crazy Heart essential viewing.  Plus great supporting roles by Colin Farrel and Maggie Gyllenhaal. (Amazon)

RENT IT

The Young Victoria Another Academy Award winner worth checking out this week.  If anything see it for the costumes and set design, which I’m sure look stunning in HD.  Capped off with a strong performance by Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria is worth checking out if you’re in the mood for a drama. (Amazon)

The Lovely Bones A huge mis-fire on Peter Jackson’s part as far as book adaptations go, The Lovely Bones is still worth a rental for the visuals and creepy performance by Stanly Tucci.  Don’t go in expecting Lord of the Rings or Heavenly Creatures; think What Dreams May Come, only better. (Amazon)

SKIP IT

Avatar What? SKIP Avatar? Are you smoking something? No. This is a low scheme by the movie studios to sucker all of us in to a Double Dip. For starters, Avatar will not be in stores today, but Thursday (22nd, Earth Day).  Secondly, In November, there will be a massive Special Edition of Avatar with hours and hours of behind the scenes footage.  Plus, the 3D Blu Ray (requiring a 3D-HDTV and 3D-Blu Ray Player) will come out next year. What’s on this 2 Disc set? Nothing.  Just the movie on one disc and a shitty Digital Copy on the other disc.  I’m holding out for November’s release. (Amazon)

As a matter of full disclosure, I feel I have to let you all know that AGAINST MY OWN ADVICE I purchased Avatar on Blu Ray. I saw how pretty the film looked in High Def, I couldn’t help myself.

We’ll see how the Special Edition comes out, I’ll probably buy that too after selling this version on Amazon.

“Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in!”
