Movie Review: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Rating: ★★★★☆

Directed By: Shane Black

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, and Michelle Monaghan

Plot Synopsis:

Petty thief Harry Lockart (Robert Downey Jr.) gets caught up in a murder investigation in this action-packed comedy. Posing as an actor, Harry heads to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds an authentic acting coach in detective Perry Van Shrike (Val Kilmer). But the bright lights of Hollywood fade when a murder takes place and Harry, Perry and Harry’s high school dream girl (Michelle Monaghan) become part of the investigation.

Review:

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a movie I’ve been meaning to watch for the last couple of years.  It would show up via Netflix and I would always have intentions to watch it, but never get around to it.  Finally, home with the flu, I decided I had nothing better to do so I popped it in.  Man, I wish I hadn’t taken so long to watch this movie!

Very much a take on the film noir detective movies in the 30s and 40s, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is narrated by our hero Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.).  At first this is a little odd, but I went with it and it’s a nice touch.  This device lets us know we don’t have to take this movie seriously and we can settle in and enjoy the dark comedy that Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is.

Robert Downey Jr. is awesome in his role as the unlikely hero.  Here he shows off his genius before he took the world by storm with Ironman and Tropic Thunder.  Also, Val Kilmer is extremely entertaining here.  Probably my favorite role of his since Doc Holiday in Tombstone.

So, if you’re in the mood for an Action/Comedy/Murder Mystery and haven’t checked out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang yet, you’re missing out.  It’s a highly entertaining and thrilling movie that I know I’ll be re-visiting again soon.

Rated R for language, violence and sexuality/nudity.
