Four Boxes is mis-categorized as "horror" - it's more "mind-bender" than anything. I'd say this movie is twisted, funny, suspenseful, well-acted, and smartly written. Clearly you're not down for any subtlety or irony in your movie scripts. I think the dialogue you despise was, on the contrary, MEANT to seem shallow - the quality of the acting, and of the relationships revealed gradually by the movie's progression, reveals that these characters WISH they could be other than the shallow people they're becoming. That's the tragedy that's going on here, and the social commentary the movie is trying to get at (if only you'd let it) - a wry commentary on the mind-numbing banality of conventional, dead-end, strip-mall-defined suburban living and the people stuck within it. I found the subplot of the characters' relationships with each other to be as engaging and suspenseful as the main plot surrounding the "internet killer." I thought the pacing and editing could have been improved (you're right about that) and I also had some issues with the ending - it seemed too quick, and maybe too easy, but it was more about disappointment and the stupid waste of these kids' lives than about providing us, the audience, with an opportunity to get our horror movie rocks off. If that's what you want most from a movie, then, no, this movie won't deliver. If you're interested in smart dialogue and character development (yes, disguised as dumb dialogue - get it?), good acting, and a view on our current cultural landscape that derides any easy answers, plus suspense and humor, you'll find it here.

Not sure if I contacted you before. My husband created FACES OF DEATH. He wrote, produced, directed and acted in them. Now he's doing an online review show with me. check it out out www.twojewsonfilm.com or youtube.com/user/twojewsonfilm. We review films, usually disagree and rate them with bagels...one to five

Thoughtful article, Sean. I'm sure you feel a lot better getting that off your chest. I've managed to stay out of your ongoing KS convo b/c I was never certain where you stood; one day you're selling all your DVDs, the next day you're praising Smith. Kinda confusing. But at least you touched on that here. And your position is much clearer now.

I haven't formed an opinion yet. Just sidelining until we see more chips fall. It's interesting that Smith gave up providing free speaking gigs (college tours, comic conventions, etc) when he realized he could charge $50 a ticket and still sell out. Figured it wouldn't take too long before he starting milking that cash cow but I miss seeing him speak at the Cons.

Ron, excellent thoughts! Thanks.

I agree, there's a lot to like about Susperia. In fact, even though I wasn't taken by it immediately, it has stuck with me. The score especially. It's now in my Top 10 movie scores of all time.

Suspiria is one of those movies I plan on re-watching. I actually expect it will grow on me the more I watch it. Argento is truly a horror master, I look forward to discovering more of his films.

Martyrs didn't elicit as strong a response from me as I thought it would, based on all the online buzz leading up to my viewing. I actually watched it twice in one month; once on my own and then once during a movie night with friends.

It certainly leaves a lasting impression. Like you, I was caught off-guard by the directions the movie headed in. Some of the most violent parts of the movie are also the most introspective.

I expect I'll probably have a similar response to A Serbian Film when I finally see it as well.

Sean, just listened to your podcast talking about Suspiria as well, with Jay. Suspiria is definitely one of those films that elicits a "loved it" or "hated it" response. I have a long history with this movie; it was the first Argento film I saw many years ago, and for it's time I think it was definitely creepy.

It definitely has one of the creepiest scores in film history, by the amazing Goblins. I loved the score so much I hunted it down on CD some time ago.

The cinematography is excellent as well and goes a long way towards redeeming the weak plot.

I think anyone who's a fan of Argento knows that plot really isn't his strong point. Even Argento himself says he doesn't get hung up on plot. Jay has a great book about Argento that's worth reading. Definitely puts his filmmaking approach into perspective.
