Muppet cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” rules all

This has been making it’s way throughout the blogs. It made my night.

Check out The Muppets taking on Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” in all it’s splendor. Love it.

Someone much cooler than me created a Lego Serenity

Someone who is much more creative than me, but a fan of Firefly created a Lego Serenity spaceship.  It’s awesome and I’m jealous I didn’t think of it.

DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 11/24/2009

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me.  I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person.  At least I’m not spending money on heroine.

New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week.  Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations.

Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

Rent It:
Funny People

Funny People [Blu-ray]
List Price: $39.98
Amazon Price: $23.99

Average customer review:

A lot of people loved the Dramedy with Adam Sandler & Seth Rogen, but also a lot of people hated it. Blamed for being a bit long in the tooth, Funny People drags on 20 minutes longer than it should. However, there is a lot to love and we’d all love to see Adam Sandler out of the usual shit-hole movies he does.

Star Trek

Star Trek (Three-Disc +Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]
List Price: $39.99

Seeing Star Trek in the theater was my favorite summer movie experience of 2009. A Star Trek movie for non-Trekkers and Trekkers alike, although some of the “Super-Trekkers” may have some gripes. Hands down, this is my favorite Star Trek film right behind Wrath of Khan and First Contact.

Movie Review: The Brothers Bloom

2008_the_brothers_bloom_001

The Brothers Bloom

Rating: ★★★★½

Directed By: Rian Johnson

Starring: Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel Weisz, Rinko Kikuchi

Plot:

All their lives, brothers Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) and Bloom (Adrien Brody) have perfected the fine art of the con.  Now they’re ready for one last spectacular score – luring Penelope (Rachel Weisz), an eccentric heiress, into an elaborate scheme that takes them around the world.

Review:

While “cookie cutter” stories are littering Hollywood and the current box office, many original and memorable movies are being tossed into minimal theatrical releases and horribly thought out DVD/Blu Ray releases.  Case in point: if you want to own the wonderfully original and quirky film The Brothers Bloom, you’ll have to either steal it from a local video rental establishment (not recommended!), or buy it from our Canadian neighbors (I chose the latter).  Or, just wait until January for the U. S. release and rent it numerous times until then.  Either way, The Brothers Bloom is a film that needs to be seen.

Spiderman Arrested in L.A. for Slugging the Innocent!

spider_cuffs-550x387

A Spider-man impersonator was arrested for alleged assault on Hollywood Blvd.  No further details are available on what caused the altercation, however it can be assumed the Spider-man impersonator mistook an innocent bystander as Morbius.

The impersonator, 39-year-old Christopher Loomis, was one of 4 Spider-man impersonators in the area, causing some confusion for police arriving on the scene.  Loomis was being held on outstanding misdemeanor warrants in lieu of $5,500 bail.

Punk Rock Feminism in the 90s or Genetically Engineered Kangaroo/Dog/Men are Good in Bed: A reflection on 1995′s Tank Girl.

tank_girl_pic

The 1990s was a strange decade.  We saw the death rattle of the 80s with Guns n Roses, the birth and death of Ska in popular culture, and the birth of Mall Punk and Hot Topic with Green Day (just to name a few).  One big theme of the 90s was Girl Power, or “Grrrl Power” or “Riot Grrl,” whatever you want to call it.  This paved the way for Sailor Moon, The Powerpuff Girls, and No Doubt.  Combine those three and you pretty much have 1995′s Tank Girl, complete with a Gwen Stefani look-a-like in the lead role (Lori Petty).

Based on the much cooler comic from the UK of the same name, Tank Girl took a Cliff Notes/Paint-by-numbers approach to the film.  The film is odd, disjointed and full of many WTF moments (I’ll get to those in a second…).  Compared to the comic, Tank Girl is the Americanized bastardization of what seems to be a fairly brilliant comic.  All that aside, after a few beers, Tank Girl is quite enjoyable trash.
