DVD/Blu Ray Releases for 11/17/2009

DVD/Blu Ray Releases for 11/17/2009

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me.  I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person.  At least I’m not spending money on heroine.

New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week.  Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations.

Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

Must Buy:

Star Trek

Star Trek (Three-Disc +Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]
List Price: $39.99
Amazon Price: $19.99

Seeing Star Trek in the theater was my favorite summer movie experience of 2009. A Star Trek movie for non-Trekkers and Trekkers alike, although some of the “Super-Trekkers” may have some gripes. Hands down, this is my favorite Star Trek film right behind Wrath of Khan and First Contact.

Franklyn
Franklyn [Blu-ray]
List Price: $35.98
Amazon Price: $21.49

Average customer review:

There’s something to be said about the production design oabout Franklyn. While the story is said to be confusing, Franklyn is a strong calling card for director Gerald McMorrow. I look forward to what he has to offer if given a larger budget.
Thirst
Thirst

List Price: $29.98
Amazon Price: $19.99

The director of Oldboy, Park Chan-wook, tackles a Vampire Priest. Enough said.

Humpday

List Price: $26.98
Amazon Price  $19.99

The newest offering from the film sub-genre dubbed “Mumble-core” The premise hinges on two heterosexual guy friends thrown into an artistic project where they wrestle with the idea of performing gay sex on film. This scenario tests the friendship and so on and so forth, usually with hilarious results. If this sounds interesting to you, give this one a chance.

Bruno
Brüno [Blu-ray]
List Price: $39.98
Amazon Price: $20.99

Average customer review: Rent via NetFlix

I’ve heard mixed things about the follow up to Borat. Mainly that Bruno is extremely mean spirited, but at times hilarious. Mild recommended rental for those who are curious.

Steven Soderbergh has been creating thought provoking cinema for a long time. It’s great to see one of his best available in HD.
