Battlefield Earth Scribe Publicly Apologizes For Writing the “Worst Movie of Decade”

Let me start by apologizing to anyone who went to see “Battlefield Earth.”

It wasn’t as I intended — promise. No one sets out to make a train wreck. Actually, comparing it to a train wreck isn’t really fair to train wrecks, because people actually want to watch those.

Writer J. D. Shapiro penned an open letter to the NY Post following his acceptance of his Razzie Award for Battlefield Earth as the “Worst Movie of the Decade.” The letter is a lighthearted, yet heart felt apology to anyone who saw the movie.  It also gives us a peek behind the curtain of Scientology and the movie making process.

DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 3/30/2010

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me. I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person. At least I’m not spending money on heroine.

New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations.

Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

MUST BUY

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes in an action flick? Once you set your expectations of a slow, ponderous Victorean detective story, there’s a lot of fun to be had with Guy Ritchie’s take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved character. Robert Downey Jr. is clearly having a lot of fun with this role and his sharp wit goes a long way. (Buy on Amazon, Rent on Netfllix)

Burger King Goes Horror With New Late Night Ads

In order to advertise Burger King’s late night hours, the company hired Dubai based ad agency Tonic to come up with some print ads.  I’m very pleased they went the Horror route and used some key Horror Icons for some pretty entertaining ads.  (Although there are a couple glaring mistakes with a certain villan’s clawed hand, see if you can point it out.)

Iron Sky in Pre-Production, Space Nazis Revealed!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything about the upcoming film Iron Sky. An “alt-history” high concept comedy about Nazi’s living on the moon. The last time we heard anything there were only concept pictures and a concept teaser trailer.

The geek in me leaped for joy when I learned that Pre-Production has started on the film, and we can all glimpse the first look at the Nazi Moon Troopers.  Iron Sky is set to be released some time in 2011.  For more information, check out the Official Iron Sky Website.

Overpriced 3D Movie Tickets About to Get More Overpriced

If you didn’t feel like you were getting bent over by movie theaters enough with the higher cost of 3D movies, get ready to grab your ankles.

Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings and AMC Entertainment will push 3D ticket prices higher, starting this weekend.  Hopefully this will burst the 3D gimmick bubble and we can get back to viewing movies without the migraines.

According to the Wall Street Journal:

So, not only are 3D prices being hiked up, IMAX prices will sky rocket also.  All this solidifies my intent on buying the largest LED-LCD TV I can find and enjoy standard non-migraine inducing flicks at home without feeling violated by the Movie Industry.

An Argument for Movie Piracy

One of my major pet peeves is commercials and trailers on the Blu Ray and DVD format.  Even worse are trailers and ads that you are FORCED to watch.  If you’re going to show trailers, can’t the manufacturers at least let us skip directly to the Main Menu if we don’t want to see them?

The above picture [click it to enlarge] does a great job of explaining my point.  If you want to watch a certain movie, sometimes it’s easier to pirate the thing.  I really hope movie studios are listening to the grumblings of movie buffs like myself.  We’ve paid money for the movies we own, let us watch them!
