So, say you went to the restroom at 50 minutes in when Captain Pike says, “Chekov, you have the con.” Here’s what you missed during those 3 minutes, according to RunPee:

Nero and his crew prepare the ‘red matter’ – we don’t know what that is yet. Capt. Pike gives orders along the way to the shuttle craft. He promotes Kirk to first officer and tells him that he, Sulu and Olson are going to go with him on the shuttle craft and he is going to drop them off along the way so that they can dive down the length of the drilling cable so that they can disable it. Pike then promotes Spock to Captain and leaves him in command of the Enterprise.
