DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 4/27/2010

April 28, 2010 in DVD/BD Releases

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me. I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person. At least I’m not spending money on heroine. New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week. Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations. Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

Terry Gilliam is hit or miss with most audiences, though I’m always up for checking out his films at least once.  He’s responsible for some classics such as Monty Python’s and the Holy Grail, Brazil and 12 Monkeys.  Here, we have Heath Ledger‘s Swan Song.  His untimely death in the middle of filming this movie presented some challenges for Gilliam, and that along makes this movie worth checking out.  Cleverly using Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to replace Ledger is a ballsy move, and one worth applauding. I can’t 100% write this movie off.  It’s a harmless date movie and many people enjoyed it. Alec Baldwin is always fun these days and Meryl Streep can do no wrong.  So, if you’re up for a check-your-brain-at-the-door and semi-original romantic comedy, you could do much worse. [Amazon]

Oh boy, another spoof movie.  Gone are the genius days of Airplane! and Top Secret.  I’ll even tip the hat to Hot Shots! But these days, the spoof movie is dead to me.  They died in the late 80s and I’ve never looked back.  *Sigh* [Amazon]
