Cronos (1993)

★★★★★

Macabre. Dark. Funny.

Guillermo del Toro flips the Vampire genre on it's head. Still one of my favorite Horror films of all time.

★★★★½

One of the best ghost stories to come around in a long time. Great atmosphere & acting. Genuine scares the first time around. One of my favorites.

Ip Man 2 (2010)

★★★★

While not as epic as the first, IP MAN 2 is still an excellent martial arts flick centered around the life of Bruce Lee's mentor Ip Man.

I think this role is Donnie Yen's most rounded performance. He's great in the role and shows that Yen is much more than just an action star.

Legend Of The Fist: The Return Of Chen Zhen

20110711-053009.jpg

★★★★

If you have the patience for forced melodrama, you'll be rewarded with some amazing Martial Arts sequences and a stellar performance by Donnie Yen. A sequel to the original Jet Li flick FIST OF LEGEND (that being a remake of the Bruce Lee classic FISTS OF FURY) and the TV series starring Donnie Yen, LEGEND OF THE FIST is a decent way to kill 2 hours.

It never reaches the heights of the amazing WWI opening scene, but the action is still better than anything mainstream you'll see.

★★★★★

This is the epic Samurai flick I've been waiting for since I first saw 7 SAMURAI. Epic. Well shot and well told. Plus, the last 45 minutes is balls out awesomeness.

Ip Man (2008)

IMDB, Amazon, Netflix

IP Man blew me away.  First because it's based on a true story of Bruce Lee's mentor, and secondly the action/fight scenes are off the charts! Such a good movie.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008)

IMDB, Amazon, Netflix

Ji-woon Kim throws his hat into the Western genre with The Good, The Bad, The Weird and the world is a better place because of it.  This strange, funny and exciting flick is 2 hours of non-stop action.  Each actions set piece is memorable on many levels, and it features 2 of the best chase sequences I've seen in the past 5 years.

Seven Samurai (1954)

IMDB, Amazon, Netflix

Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, Seven Samurai, got a Criterion Blu Ray release this year.  I snatched it up the day it came out and don't regret it one bit.

When I was younger, I refused to watch Seven Samurai, because back then, I didn't think that older movies were worth checking out.  Finally, in college, I gave it a shot and it's now one of my all time favorites.  Seven Samurai is as compelling today as it was over 50 years ago.  Also, the Criterion release is immaculate.  If you don't own it, you should.
