Shame (2011)

★★★★½

Gut wrenching. Brilliant. A honest look at addiction and sibling relationships.

The Cabin In The Woods (2012)

★★★★★

Not what you're expecting. Gets bat-shit insane. SEE IT!!!

The Mummy (1999)

20120413-232820.jpg

★★★½

A pale imitation to INDIANA JONES, THE MUMMY is still stupid, pulpy fun. Obviously, Brendan Fraser is extremely miscast here as he tries on his best Harrison Ford impersonation.

Overall, THE MUMMY is a harmless action film trying to channel the 80s sense of fun.

Submarine (2010)

★★★★½

Funny, refreshing, original.

April Fools Day (1986)

20120401-015700.jpg

★★★

This is a flick that I remember from the VHS box art I used to see in the Video Rental store. Never did see it.

I finally gave this a shot and can say I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining this flick is. Still a dumb 80s "horror" but fun.

★★★★

See this movie. That is all.

John Carter (2012)

20120310-162512.jpg

★★★★

The marketing campaign for John Carter was sorely botched by Disney. What I saw on the screen was a fantastic otherworldly fun & action-packed film.

It's a shame that the movie won't come away this weekend a big hit, however I'm sure that word-of-mouth is going to help John Carter stick around.

Eye-popping special effects, a well-written script, and a sense of fun and adventure help elevate John Carter above some of the more generic aspects of the story. When it's all said and done the spectacle is well worth the wait and I really hope that Andrew Stanton is able to complete this trilogy.

John Carter is what the Star Wars prequels should've been. In fact I don't think I'll ever watch the Star Wars prequels ever again after this.

Blackthorn (2011)

20120309-061815.jpg

★★★½

Sam Shepard turns in a great performance as an aged Butch Cassidy in BLACKTHORN. Cassidy is living in Bolivia and now calling himself James Blackthorn.

Amazing cinematography makes up for some pacing problems, but BLACKTHORN is worth watching especially since it is available on Netflix.

Immortals (2011)

20120307-233300.jpg

★★★½

Visually stunning yet frustratingly hollow.

I still really liked it but the script does not match the care that was obviously put into the visual design of the film.

The Lorax (2012)

20120307-234515.jpg

★★★

Cute, but falters under the weight of trying to make a simple story into full length feature.

Better than CAT IN THE HAT but not as charming as HORTON HEARS A WHO.
