The Geek Couch: Movie Tally

Dolphin Tale (2011)

★★★½

My daughter had been asking to see this so I gave in one night. Surprisingly, I'm very glad I did. Dolphin Tale is a sweet, well done family movie that actually tugs on heart strings. All the actors are on top of their game, the kids are especially great.

Highly recommended for families. Watch this instead of crap like Zookeeper.

A Christmas Carol (2009)

★★★½

Say what you will about Robert Zemeckis' motion capture (I hated THE POLAR EXPRESS), he actually nails it with A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Jim Carrey is the perfect person to throw into a playground of characters (Tom Hanks isn't) and he delivers on all fronts.

Also, my kids really enjoyed it, so that adds some bonus points.

The Expendables (2010)

★★★½

Watched the Director's  Cut. While it's a mild improvement (CG blood cleaned up, tighter editing, a bit more "character development") THE EXPENDABLES is still THE EXPENDABLES. It's a meat-head attempt at the "ultimate man movie" that falls short and is more like a Direct To Video movie you'll find in the bargain bin at Walmart. Still, I enjoy it for what it is.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

★★★★★

I wasn't prepared for this to be as amazing as it was.

Courageous (2011)

½

Fuck this movie that panders to the Evangelical crowd.

As a movie it is a total trainwreck and a joke.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

★★★★½

A creepy Spielbergian film about killer Santas? Yes. Please.

4Dec/110

Super Mario Bros. (1993)

★★½

Wow. Forgot how much of a train wreck this was. I still couldn't take my eyes off it!

3Dec/110

Sleep Dealer (2008)

★★★★

Solid Science Fiction. So well written and acted that the low budget never is an issue. Recommended.

2Dec/110

House (1986)

★★★

Ding dong, you're dead. Not as goofy as HOUSE 2, but a good time nonetheless.
