Soloman Kane Officially On the Geek Radar with Badass Poster & Clip

Category : News

Solomon1

For the uninitiated, Conan creator Robert Howard created 2 characters.  Soloman Kane is the other character, and he finally will have his geek day in the sun.

Directed by Michael J. Bassett (director of the underrated 2002 flick, Deathwatch) and starring James Purefoy (best known for his brilliant portrayal of Marc Antony in HBO’s Rome), Soloman Kane will focus on the origin of the character and hopes to be the first part of a trilogy.

Early Buzz: Is Avatar Worth the Hype?

Category : geekArticle!, News

Avatar-RT

Masked in secrecy and a decade in the making, James Cameron’s Avatar has finally entered the public culture in full force.  When the first images and trailers started appearing, many people (including myself) were underwhelmed.  Mainly at the character design of the aliens, the generic dialog heard in the trailer (“You’re not in Kansas anymore! You’re on Pandora . . .), and a plot lifted almost directly from Dances With Wolves and Pocahontas.  Plus, the statements made by the director and the marketing stating Avatar was a “Game Changer” gave us plenty of snarky ammo.

DVD/Blu-ray Releases for 12/08/2009

Category : DVD/BD Releases

Buying movies is almost a dangerous obession with me.  I love it, and probably have spent more money on movies in my lifetime than any sane person.  At least I’m not spending money on heroine.

New Movie Tuesday is my favorite day of the week.  Here are this week’s releases as well as my recommendations.

Being the film snob I am, I will recommend the Blu Ray versions of these flicks if available.

MUST BUY

Public Enemies

Public Enemies [Blu-ray]
List Price: $36.98
Amazon Price: $18.99

Average customer review:

Public Enemies split audiences in theaters, but it’s Michael Mann’s brave technical film making that sets this apart from the pack. Great performances, spectacular sound design, and unique use of HD digital cameras nudge this into a Must Buy.

RENT IT

Terminator Salvation (Director’s Cut)

Terminator Salvation (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]

List Price: $35.99
Amazon Price: $16.99

Average customer review:

If you take away your Arnie sized expectations and ejoy the ride, there’s a lot here to enjoy. At $16.99 this Blu Ray is a STEAL. But at least rent it and give it a shot.  Unfortunatly, the promised 30 minutes of cut footage isn’t here, only 3 is woven back into the film.  Basically, we have the tidbits McG had to cut from his intitial final cut in order to seal the PG-13 rating.  I have a feeling McG’s hands were tied with demands from the studio and this is what we get (or, he’s an overselling/underdelivering douche).
At any rate, there some great action, incredible sound design and some solid performances.  Nowhere near T1 or T2, but tons better than T3.  Terminator Salvation is a lot of fun, just don’t think too hard.
